Translated from Bangla book: Behester Poth O Patheo
Taken from a Majlis of Ramadan 03, 1403 Hijr
Hazrat Hafejji Hujur (R) [Khalifa Hazrat Mawlana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (R)] said, “We must always awake the thoughts of fear of Allah Taala, the fear of hell, the hardship of resurrection ground, torment of grave and ponder on those. If we meditate on the eternal Might of Allah Taala and arouse such thoughts, fear of Allah Taala would be created. By pondering on the torment of hell we have to create fear of hell (the punishment of Allah Taala) in our heart. And we should contemplate on the good deeds, which would be means for salvation and we must increase such deeds. In similar way, meditate on the agony of resurrection ground and make progress of work. Ponder on the torments of grave and make progress in good deeds. The devout of previous times used to meditate on these dreadful events and the upcoming agonies of afterlife and by doing so they used to become much worried and would wept a lot. All should ponder on these events. Books such as, Nurussudoor, Qiyamatnama and Shawke Watan must be read by all.
Allah Taala gets more pleased when his slave performs Ibadat at winter nights. The Saints who used to awake at nights, was their ‘Haal’ (a particular condition). For the overwhelming of ‘Haal’, they used to be awake the whole night and performed Ibadat. But seekers (Mureeds) do not need to do so. They should accomplish good deeds according to Sunnah because one has duty towards nafs and wife too and those should also be performed with care. The seekers must consult their Shaikh regarding sleep and Ibadat. However, until sleep triggers, continue Zikr. Then the moment there is risk of random words coming out from mouth because of drowsiness, stop doing Zikr and go to sleep.”
At this moment suddenly Hazrat (R) himself became sleepy. He then advised the audience, “You may complete your works and get ready for Asr and do Zikr till Magrib in the mosque.
