Better among Good Deeds: Less but Regular

Man should choose the minimum amount of Wazifah [voluntary Tasbih, Tilawat etc.], which he can regularly accomplish. Act upon less good deeds, but accomplish those on a regular basis. This begets much more reward than acting upon good deeds irregularly. It is mentioned in one Hadith that a man inquired Hazrat Ayesha (RA) and Hazrat Umme Salama (RA), (Meaning) “Which deed was most preferred by Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam?” Both of them (RA) answered, (Meaning) “He would prefer that Deed most which is accomplished regularly, be it less in amount.”

An example exhibiting benefits of regular good deeds

Think that single drops of water dips through a pipe and the flow of the dip is continuous. Be the surface under the dip be hard as stone, one day the surface would be infiltrated. On the other hand, open up a tap in its full flow, let the water fall down with complete force and after some time close it. The water would fast flow away, but would have no effect on the surface under it. Whereas, single drops of water could penetrate the stone-like ground. One single drop is though little in amount, but as its flow is continuous it is making an impact.

Just similarly, if a person acts upon a lot of good deed with great zeal one day and he is completely lost on the other day i.e. he is doing absolutely nothing – such practice doesn’t beget any special benefit. Therefore, the voluntary good deeds which can be accomplished regularly are more effective and useful and better though less in amount.
