Hazrat Anas (RA) reports from Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam (meaning): In Me’raj, I saw some people whose fingers had nails of flames attached and they were combing their face and chest with those. I asked Jibrayeel (AS), “Who are these people?” He replied, “They used to eat the flesh of people and abused them.” (Musnade Ahmad)
The sin of backbiting is rife today. It is for this reason, the hideousness of backbiting or geebat seems light. Most of our talks shamelessly engage in gossiping on other people’s negative points; we deem all those discussions righteous by thinking we are expressing, disclosing and describing the fact. However, exposing (or listening to) someone’s fault in his absence to (or from) other people is backbiting or geebat, i.e. the fault truly exists in the person and I am revealing (or listening to) it. The man having the fault may be punished for his sin, but I am sinning by backbiting against him, which is haraam – completely forbidden. Backbiting is similar to “eating my brother’s dead body’s flesh” according to the verse of Holy Quran!
The Pious Scholars have mentioned with great shock, geebat has become so rife today that it is being practiced by many pious-looking people in the society too! How terrible it is to imagine that I say five times prayers everyday, I carefully refrain from sins like theft, bribery, usury etc. but do not care about backbiting. The whole society, starting from home to workplaces and very unfortunately the holy places like mosques and religious centers have also been inflicted with this grave sin.
It is indeed high time for every one of us to make Tawba from geebat. Otherwise all our earnings (reward of good deed) would be transferred to other people (whose geebat we do) and we would become penniless. Alas! The hardships of our Ibadat (worship) would prove useless! May Allah Taala save us.
